    On Thursday, May 9, The Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal will launch in Southern Highlands.

    The launch showcases the work of The Salvation Army and seeks the generous financial support of key business and community leaders across Southern Highlands - people just like you.

    The Salvation Army assists 150,000 people a year*, delivering hope where it’s needed most. Your support enables us to work with people one-on-one through the most challenging times of their lives, helping them get back on their feet – for good.

    In attendance will be:
    KEYNOTE SPEAKER - Dr Peta Seaton AO, 

    Chair of Australian Hearing, NED (Menzies Research Centre, NEAF), policy thought leader and the principal of a strategic and policy consultancy. 

    As a Member of the NSW Parliament from 1996 to 2007 served as Shadow Treasurer among other front bench roles. 

    She has served on the boards of CARE Australia, BDCU Alliance Bank and the Bradman Foundation, and has been an Honorary Research Fellow at the Sydney Business School (University of Wollongong), a member of the Advisory Council of the Faculty of Science, University of NSW, and is involved in ongoing University of Sydney archaeological field work in the Middle East. 

    She is a guest lecturer and writer on public policy and public sector reform.

    Talking about your end-of-life wishes can be daunting.
    What will matter most for you at the end?

    Southern Highlands Community Hospice is pleased to host our first Palliative Care Forum during National Palliative Care Week. We have assembled a panel of experts to explore holistic best-practice end-of-life management. 

    Tuesday May 21, 1:30pm to 4pm followed by refreshments, Mittagong RSL

    We are delighted to announce our patron, 
    Dr Michael Barbato, 
    Honorary Research Fellow Palliative Care Unit, Port Kembla Hospital and author, as keynote speaker.

    Dr Barbato is a retired palliative care physician now engaged in research into the experience of unconsciousness. Together with his wife Ann, Michael also facilitates a Midwifing Death Correspondence Course for those who wish to support relatives or friends living with a life-limiting illness. 
    He has a long-standing interest in unconsciousness, the language of those who are dying and unusual experiences around the time of death. He is the author of three books on end of life and dying and has spoken at State, National and International palliative care conferences.

    Other panel members include:

    • Alex Huntir, head of Volunteer Support Services Program, Palliative Care NSW 
    • Donna Barnard, Southern Highlands Bereavement Care Service Counsellor and Co-coordinator, Bowral District Hospital 
    • Principals from Southern Highlands Community Hospice
    • Plus individuals will share their experience
    • Along with representatives from the NSW Trustee and Guardian, Cancer Council and other support organisations.
