Employing people? It’s your job to calculate pay rates, overtime, leave entitlements and more. But it’s complex.
The devil is in 250,000 words
Compliance is wrapped up in 122 modern awards and 960 sections of the Fair Work Act, with a grand total of 250,000 words. Is it any wonder that employers are making mistakes?
Even the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) concedes that modern awards are tough to interpret.
"There is no question they [awards] are complicated ... small businesses struggle with it."
FWO Sandra Parker, as reported in the Sydney Morning Herald (16 November, 2018).
Anonymous tip-offs have increased by 44%
Over 15,000 anonymous employee complaints were made to the FWO in 2017-18, while a total of $29.6 million was recovered for over 13,000 workers. It pays to be proactive.
